Space is the area beyond the upper limits of Earth’s atmosphere. It is where all of the asteroids, comets, planets, stars, solar systems and galaxies in our universe are found. Space is a vacuum, meaning it contains almost nothing, but it is not completely empty.

Earth’s atmosphere is so much more than the air we breathe. A trip from the surface of Earth to outer space would result in passing through five different layers, each with very different characteristics.

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the largest of the terrestrial planets. The Earth is the only planet in our solar system not to be named after a Greek or Roman deity. The Earth was formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago and is the only known planet to support life.
